MISSION STATEMENT

We are a charitable organization dedicated to promoting and facilitating local theatre performances and cultural activities that enrich the community, while supporting and enabling community involvement and engagement in a positive, innovative and inclusive social environment.

HISTORY

In the Spring of 2011, Jeff & Marion Rogers had a dream. Their idea was to start a small theatre in the small village of Port Burwell. Why not bring culture, theatre and fun to all who live in and those who visit the small lake side community? They shared their idea with co-founders Grahame and Ann Notman and in July 2011, the first operating committee was formed with the help of Ron Flick, Honor Wassing, Sean Hurley and Noel Hayes. Their first operating budget was $35.00 for coffee and cookies.

In November 2011, the Port Burwell Periscope Playhouse applied for and was granted their federal incorporation as a Not-for-Profit Company. We were on our way! The first play, 'Smart Ass', written by Port Stanley’s own Patrick Harding, was held at the Vienna Community Centre in July of 2012, and was a resounding success. We were really on our way now!

Between 2013 and 2015, Periscope Playhouse rented various venues and staged seven plays interspersed with Murder Mysteries and several musical events.
In February 2016, we purchased our now known permanent location at 42 Wellington St., Port Burwell. Within 5 months of purchase, the hard work, sweat and tears of dedicated volunteers turned the old Sid Shelly Scout Hall into the "Periscope Playhouse and Cultural Centre". We really did it!

We are so proud of our little theatre and since the permanent location opening in June 2016, we have continued to strive to bring quality plays, musical concerts and other community enriching events to the Periscope Playhouse. None of this would have been possible if it weren’t for our founding friends Jeff & Marion Rogers, and the many, many volunteers who have made the Playhouse what it is today. Without you, there would be no history yet to be made. We appreciate you!
